Fransisco Rosario, Mike Zagurski, and Scott Mathieson will all start the season on the disabled list. Rosario was 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA and allowed seven runs in 10 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out eight. Zagurski is on the 15 day disabled list with a torn hamstring, the same injury he had last season. Mathieson also went on the 15 day DL as he is still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Of the three, Mathieson could be the most likely to contribute in 2008. Rosario is hopefully only a back up plan that will never be used. He is wild and inconsistent.
In other news Kris Benson played catch for the second day today and is scheduled to again tomorrow before a reevaluation.
"There are no concerns structurally for what he had repaired," athletic
trainer Scott Sheridan said. "Obviously, you don’t like the fact that
he had a bump in the road at this time, but it’s one of those normal
things that happen in a rehab; they never go completely from A to B
without a bump in the road somewhere."
Tuesday is the deadline for Benson to opt out of his minor league deal. Benson may make his decision based on whether he is added to the 40 man roster or not. Ruben Amaro declined to comment on the matter. No surprise there.
