The Philadelphia Phillies lost a tough game to the Milwaukee Brewers
last night as Prince Fielder made the difference with 2 homeruns off of
Cole Hamels. I again question Charlie Manual for leaving Hamels in too
long. It is early in the season and he was due to face a hitter that
had already taken him deep. Yes it is easy to say that today, but you
have a back end of the bullpen for a reason. The better teams have
learrned that the game has changed and a starter is for 7 innings
unless he is pitching a shut out or has a really low pitch count. Just
think about how Joe Torre used his pen all of those years in New York.
Chase Utley and Pat Burrell continue to impress. If Utley hits one more
homerun in April, he will end the month with half of the total he had
all of last season. What is more impressive than his power though is
the way battles a pitcher every at bat. He rarely has a bad at bat and
many times will make an 0-2 count a 3-2 count. His approach reminds me
of Lenny Dykstra but Utley is even better.
Having Verizon Fios I could not watch the game last night so I
listened to it on XM. It was awesome hearing Bob Uecker call a game. He
is a legend that brings insight and humor to any game he calls!
What a wild game in Colorado! You do have to ask where this resolve was
last October but I’ll leave that alone for now. After Brett Myers gave
up the lead, the Phillies tied the game. Only to have Manual leave
Myers in too long and have him give up a two run homerun. But this
Phillies team does not know the word quit. A run in the 8th put the
Phillies within 1 run and then the fun started in the 9th. The Phillies
loaded the bases for Pat Burrell who doubled clearing the bases putting
the Phillies up 8-6.
I do have a question. Why in the world would you walk Ryan Howard to
pitch to Pat Burrell. I understand the lifetime numbers but just look
at their April stats. I would have taken my chances with Howard. Thanks
for the gift Clint Hurdle!
Brad Lidge came in to shut the door on the Rockies. And shut the door
he did striking out 2 pitching a perfect inning. The Phillies swept the
series and picked up a game on the Mets, Braves, and Marlins. Great
night to be a Phillies fan!!!
