The Phillies named the five finalists for the 2008 nomination to the
Phillies Wall of Fame. They are John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, Darren
Daulton, Juan Samuel, and Greg Gross. A committee of Phillies
executives and media will now make the final decision of who will be
inaugerated to the Wall on Ashburn Alley. The fans voted and chose the
finalists to narrow the results for the committee. Before I go on my
soap box, I would like to say of the finalists I support John Kruk.
A name left out of the finalists that should have been put on the wall
years ago is Jim Konstanty. Big Jim helped the Phillies go to the World
Series for only the second time in their history in 1950 and was a key
member of the Whiz Kids. Konstanty not only won 16 games from the
bullpen but he saved 22 games (something rare in those days) and became
the only relief pitcher before or since to win the MVP award.
At this point only the older fans have seen or remember Konstanty but
it is a shame that the younger fans can not learn about him when they
go to the wall of fame.
It is time Jim Konstanty receives his just do and is put on the
Phillies Wall of Fame. Phightin’ Phils Phorum will continue to campaign
for this enshrinement. To keep Konstanty on peoples minds, we will have
an award in his honor for the relief pitcher that has a stellar
performance or streak.
