Opening Night

It felt almost like dejavu. The same sick feeling in the stomach. A
game that could have been won, but was lost. Here we are on April 2nd
and we are 2 games under .500 2 1/2 games out of first place and the
ghosts of April’s past are haunting us.

Cole Hamels pitched 8 innings giving up 5 hits and the only run of
the game on a Ryan Zimmerman homerun. Hamels was shaky starting the
game and had some control issues but he settled in after the first
inning and breezed through until the homerun in the sixth. One concern
was the velocity on his fastball. Every time I looked at the radar gun
it read 87 or 88. Hamels is a pitcher that usually hits 93 or so.
Hopefully it was just the cold weather.

The bats were DEAD. One hit. One lousy hit. The only excitement was the
fun of all of the college kids screaming and dancing after having too
many adult beverages. Hot dogs were flying and the party was on. In the
top level one college kid had a Mets shirt on. I am not sure whether he
got out alive.

The Phillies will try to get out alive tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm.
They will try to salvage a game in this series and not get swept like
they did to start last season against the Braves. Jamie Moyer gets the
nod for the Phillies while Jason Bergmann takes the hill for
Washington. Tickets are still available if you are interested in going.
Call 215-463-1000 or go to Phillies.com.

Pictures from tonights game will be posted within the hour. I will put out a post with a link to them.

Opening Series Match Ups

The good news for the Phillies is that they face the Washington
Nationals in the opening series this year. The Nationals are a scrappy
team that can not be taken lightly, but at least Brett Myers.jpgon paper, the Phillies
have the advantage. The pitching match ups are as follows:

Monday:
Brett Myers (5-7 4.33 ERA) vs Matt Chico (7-9 4.63 ERA)

Wednesday:
Cole Hamels (15-5 3.39 ERA) vs Tim Redding (3-6 3.64 ERA)

Thursday:
Jamie Moyer (14-12 5.01 ERA) vs Jason Bergmann (6-6 4.45 ERA)

The projected line up for Monday’s game against the Southpaw Chico is:

1. Jimmy Rollins SS
2. Shane Victorino CF
3. Chase Utley 2B
4. Ryan Howard 1B
5. Pat Burrell LF
6. Pedro Feliz 3B
7. Jayson Werth RF
8. Carlos Ruiz C
9. Brett Myers P

Fans may have to wait a day to see newly acquired outfielder Geoff
Jenkins as Matt Chico is left handed. He could come off the bench but
will probably not start. Less than 36 hours to game time!
